Information For Cook Islands Visitors

Cook Islands Date and Time

If you're traveling to the Cook Islands, you must take care and be responsible for your well-being. Make sure you are covered by travel insurance, ( that is: covered for medical, luggage, jewelery...etc ). 

To ensure that you do not have to pay for another airfare from the Cook Islands, please make sure that you arrive at the airport 2 hours before departure. Confirm your departure date with Air New Zealand at the Rarotongan Airport.

The Rarotongan International Airport is 4.5km from the main village of Avarua. Most accommodations provide transfers from the airport. Raro Tours operate airport shuttles.

Avarua is the capital village of Rarotonga where all the services that traveler's need are located; Post Office, Banks, Cafes, Restaurants and Supermarkets.

(1) Unit of Currency is the New Zealand dollar. The Cook Islands have their own minted coins plus notes, but these are only legal tender in the Cook Islands. Most major resorts and restaurants accept VISA, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club.  Both banks can give you cash advances on your credit cards.

(2) General Health - We have a modern hospital with New Zealand-trained Doctors and Dentists. Travel Insurance is recommended. Bring a mosquito repellent.

(3) Immigration - An extension stay may be granted on a monthly basis for up to three months. Visitors must have valid passports and a return or onward ticket.

Applications for longer stays than 31 days can be submitted to the Immigration Department. A fee is payable with each application within 14 days before the expiration of the permit.

Visitors wishing to stay in the Cook Islands longer than 6 months must apply for a visa from their home country, before arriving in the Cook Islands. Please direct applications to:

(4) Climate - The best holiday months are from March until November. The temperature for the dry months from April to November can range from about 20ºC to 26. The wetter months from December up to March can average up to 28ºC. The cooler months are June through to August where temperatures can drop to about 18°C.

(5) Drivers License - This can be obtained from the Cook Islands Police Headquarters in Avarua, by presenting your current drivers licence. You will have to sit a short driving test and the charge for a Cook Islands Licence is $20. You can also purchase a temporary licence from any Car & Scooter Rental Dealer. Driving is on the left hand side of the road. There are two speed limits: 50km/h & 40km/h

Cars, Trucks & Buses must not exceed 50km/h
Motorcyclists wearing a helmet must not exceed 50km/h
Motorcyclists not wearing a helmet must not exceed 40km/h
Cars, Trucks & Buses towing a trailer must not exceed 40km/h





Dogs are free to roam, so be aware of this when riding on either the main road or the back road, this has caused many visitors to fall off their scooters. The best thing to do is, be on the look out at all times, don't take your eyes off the road momentary, travel slow (At the required speed limit of 40k's).

(6) Customs Allowance - The limits to be brought to the islands are: 200 cigarettes, 250g tobacco, or 50 cigars; 2 litres of spirits or wine, or 4.5 litres of beer. Goods up to the value of NZ $250 are duty free.

(7) Communication - Telecom Cook Islands is the communications provider of the Cook Islands. Most services are available from 8am to 4pm. The international code is +682, and the directory assistance is open 24hours. Directory assistance numbers are local/national 010 and international 017.

Telecom Cook Islands which is on the inland road running by the Cooks Corner, follow the signs. It is Open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

: Telecom Cook Islands opens from 7am - 7pm Monday to Sunday.

(8) Banking - Westpac and ANZ and the Bank of the Cook Islands are the main banks on Rarotonga. Aitutaki has a branch of the Westpac Bank and an agent on Atiu. ANZ and Westpac have ATM facilities at their Avarua branch and also at the airport. There are also Western Union offices on most islands.

(10) Departure Tax - Included in your ticket.

(11) Clothing - Light and casual wear, a hat and sun screen, and a light jacket may be needed for the evenings during the cooler months from June to August. Nude sunbathing is prohibited.

(12) Shopping - All major stores are in Avaru.

Shopping hours are 8am to 4pm weekly and 8am to 12pm on Saturday. There is no Sunday trading.

Smaller Local stores are open seven days, but alcohol beverages are not sold on Sundays.

Wigmores Superstore in Vaimaanga is open 7 days of the week, from 6am - 9pm

Saturday Market (Punanga Nui Market) is open from the early hours of the morning till noon. You can shop here for fresh fruits, vegetables & Local Delicacies

(13) Electricity - 230volts at 50Hz. All electrical appliances take Australian-style, three pronged plugs.

(14) Tipping - Tipping and bargaining are not encouraged.

(15) Language - The official language is Cook Islands Maori, English is the second language which is widely spoken.

(16) Tap Water: Rarotonga's tap water comes from streams in the mountains, so water must be cooked before being consumed. Buy bottled water and get a refill at our water stations situated around the Rarotonga.
